Painting an old butchers block, maintaining the worn look!

The following project was slightly different from my usual kitchen painting! A client made contact with regards to painting an old butchers workstation.

There were many things to consider during the pricing and during the painting. The brief was "We want to keep the worn look, so no filling, we want rid of all splinters and roughness. We also want to be able to use the top safely"

The pictures above show how worn this piece really was. The handles were to be removed and re fixed on completion. These had some old yellow paint on that the client wanted to keep. The biggest headache would be the work top. There were new boards that had been recoloured and there was also a lot of congealed blood on the surface.

I cleaned it all down and removed the sticky residues and oiled with Osmo to give a smooth safe surface to eat and work on. Keeping the patina was equally important as it showed the character of the piece.

As you can see above it fought me all the way. I caught my finger on a hidden nail whilst sanding. At least I found it and not the client or their children.

Once I removed nails and loose splinters I could begin with the priming. A fantastic individual colour was decided and the primer and finish paint were ordered.

The workstation was painted inside and out and the internal shelves were a jigsaw! However, all were marked so that they went back in easily after painting.

I toyed with the idea of re colouring the back two boards but the client wanted to see the old and new.Painting kitchens Aylesbury kitchen cabinet painter Aylesbury

A unique piece of history given a new lease of life. It is not to everybody's taste, but I loved the honesty and individuality of the piece.

I have tried to show all the dings close up. There are plenty of them! The clients were  over the moon with the finished workstation. Just the rest of the kitchen to complete to finish the new look.

A great little project to work on and a great deal of satisfaction taken from the fact that this old workstation will continue working for this Hertfordshire family.
